Guidelines

Here are the guidelines for the sort of stories we'd like to see in Eita!. Our intent with this page is not to define ourselves for prospective writers, but to present ourselves to our English-speaking audience. These are general guidelines and, if what's written here clashes with what is in the open call (Edital), the information contained there supersedes this one. If you’re considering submitting a story, we recommend you drop by the Brazilian Portuguese version of this page.

WE ARE FANTASTICAL
We publish in the genre known as SFF, science fiction and fantasy — although this name might be a misnomer, as there’s a growing number of genres we like that don’t sit comfortably under that umbrella, but are welcome at our table. We prefer the term insólito, a nice technical word meant to cover all genres in which the rules of reality don’t necessarily match the rules of the world we see around us. This means it's not about fitting in the fantasy, horror, or sci-fi genres stereotypes. Sometimes the fantastical elements can show up very clearly, other times they might be expressed through murky and hazy lines.

WE ARE BRAZILIAN
We are a Brazilian team publishing Brazilian authors. We want the whole world to see the kinds of literatures we are creating — literatures plural, for there are many. We don’t publish works about Brazil, necessarily; in the same way that a story doesn’t need to go APPLE PIE HAMBURGER BIG TRUCK GERRYMANDERING to be identifiable as a work by an US author, we find that a story's authenticity comes from the author's unique perspective, that is, by publishing stories written by perceptive, insightful Brazilian writers, we inherently represent the country's many realities in a way that transcends stereotypes and clichés. Some of our stories could only happen here, some of them happen really far away, and some of them, well, who knows? What matters is that we try to bring voices from all corners of our country and present them to the world at large.

WE ARE HUMAN
We do not accept works created with the assistance of generative AI.
There are many reasons for that decision — some of them good, some of them bad, some of them simply wrong — so we kept ours simple. As stated above, we intend to publish works by Brazilian authors. Generative AIs are not Brazilian — neither are the large sample of works they mooch from, nor the lines of code that make them tick. One of our reasons for creating this magazine is that we were tired of voices from elsewhere trying to speak for us; we continue to believe that even if the voices have since been automated.
The use of the word ‘generative’ is deliberate; we don’t particularly care about the use of assistive AI, such as the kind used by Grammarly and other similar software.

WE HAVE TRICKED YOU
Ultimately, these are all broad guidelines. We hope this doesn’t cause our prospective authors to self-censor and self-reject — or worse, not write them in the first place. Let us see what you’ve got.
